OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY

DOW JONES SUSTAINABILITY INDEX

Grupo México and Southern Copper Corporation have been part of the MILA region (Latin American Integrated Market) of this index since 2017 and 2019 respectively. In 2023, both companies continue to be the only two companies in the Mining and Metals sector within this region of the index. Our presence in this index is the result of the company’s continuous improvement in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance and its corresponding disclosure in our institutional reports.”

FTSE4Good

Grupo México has also been included in the FTSE Russell FTSE4Good sustainability index since 2019, forming part of the FTSE4Good Emerging Latin America (public companies in the Latin American market) and the FTSE4Good BIVA (public companies in the Mexican market) series”.

RECOGNITIONS

MSCI

In 2023, Grupo México advanced one level (from B to BB) in comparison to its 2022 score in the ESG Ratings assessment conducted by the MSCI agency[1]. great place to work

In the labor aspect, our Processing Plant in Sonora, our smelter and refinery for ore mined in the region, received Great Place to Work certification to rank our plant the best place to work in the Northwest Region and the fourth best place to work in Mexico, among companies with more than 500 employees. ​ Our Processing Plant also ranked among the Top 10 Best Places for Women to Work in 2023. With this recognition, we take our place as the employer of choice for the best professionals in the country, affirming our organizational culture of safety, trust and certainty for all company personnel.”

Sustainalytics

In 2024, Grupo México decreased one level of risk in the ESG Risk Ratings Report evaluation by the rating agency Morningstar Sustainalytics, moving from a High risk level (30.07) in 2023 to a Medium risk level (27.53) in 2024. The Copper mark

We received The Copper Mark, The Zinc Mark and The Molybdenum Mark responsible production seals in 2023 for our La Caridad Mine, our Sonora Processing Plant and the​ San Luis Potosi Zinc Refinery. These certifications are awarded for responsible production, focusing on various areas, including: i) human rights, ii) community relations, iii)​ working conditions, iv) the environment, and v) legal compliance. We also started the certification process for our Buenavista del Cobre mine in Sonora and for our three mines in​ Peru (Cuajone, Toquepala and Ilo).”).

ISO 14001

In 2023, our environmental management systems from all our Mining Division business units are certified under the ISO 14001 standard.

Wildlife Habitat Council

In biodiversity, we received Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) certification for the conservation efforts of our Buenavista del Cobre Wildlife Conservation Center (in Spanish, the UMA) in the gene recovery, behavioral rehabilitation and reintroduction of the Mexican Gray Wolf (canis lupus baileyi), as part of the Mexico-USA Binational Conservation Program for the Mexican Gray Wolf.

Mexican Mining Chamber

In occupational safety, our “La Caridad” Processing Plant (METCO) precious metals plant received the Casco de Plata award for the third year in a row. The Mexican Mining​ Chamber awards this recognition each year to the operations with the best performance in Workplace Health & Safety.

ISO 45001

100% of our mines received ISO 45001 certification in 2023 for their occupational health and safety management systems.

Sustainability Yearbook

For the third consecutive year, both Grupo México and Southern Copper Corporation have been included in the Sustainability Yearbook 2024, listing the top 15% of companies in each sector based on Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) ratings.​

ELSAA Program Award

We also received the ELSSA Program Award for all our mining operations in Mexico. The Mexican government awards this recognition to companies that promote safe and healthy workplace environments.”

S&P Global

Both Grupo México and Southern Copper Corporation ranked in the top 10% of mining sector companies in 2023, Grupo México taking 9th and SCC 18th out of 200. We also received some of the highest scores for the sector in topic areas that include emissions, energy, labor practices, safety, human rights and water. Also, our subsidiary Grupo México Transportes (GMXT) improved its score by 14% over 2022.

CDP

In 2023, Grupo México maintained its rating of “B” in evaluations of climate change and water security, on a scale of eight levels, positioning two levels above the global average rating of “C” for companies worldwide. Additionally, in 2023, we responded to the Forests questionnaire for the first time, aiming to further identify areas of opportunity in alignment with sector expectations.

Socially Responsible Company (ESR)

The Infrastructure and Transportation divisions have been awarded the Socially Responsible Company (ESR) distinction by the Mexican Center for Philanthropy (CEMEFI) for the seventh and ninth consecutive years, respectively. ESR recognizes companies and organizations established in Mexico that meet a series of criteria encompassing economic, social, and environmental profitability and sustainability.

Corporate Human Rights Benchmark

Grupo México participated in the World Benchmark Alliance Corporate Human Rights Benchmark annual assessment, for which we provide detailed explanations of our due​ diligence process for human rights and descriptions of our programs to protect the human rights of our employees, communities and stakeholders. We improved 5 positions in​ the extractive companies category in 2023, ranking 14th (out of 55), compared with our 19th position in 2020.

National and internatonal forums

In 2023, Grupo México was invited to 7 national and international forums to showcase the company’s Community Development Model as a best practice. Notably, our participation in the 12th UN Global Forum on Business and Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland, underscores our commitment to advancing human rights principles on a global scale.

Empresas Excepcionales recognition

We received the Empresas Excepcionales recognition awarded by the Business Coordinating Council, the Institute for Quality Promotion, and the Council of Communication for maintaining social practices that contribute to improving the quality of life through the Community Development model.

Inter-American Development Bank

Since 2018, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has recognized our Community Development Model as one of the best community practices in the extractive industry in Latin America. In 2021, the IDB reaffirmed this recognition for having modernized all our social programs in response to the current pandemic, with the “Casa Grande virtual” strategy..

Mexican Association of Organizational Communicators

In the social realm, the Business Coordinating Council (Consejo Coordinador Empresarial, CCE) and the Mexican Association of Organizational Communicators (Asociación Mexicana de Comunicadores Organizacionales, AMCO) recognized the social impact of the Mobile Documentary Film Workshop (Taller Ambulante de Cine Documental, TACD) that we promote in the communities where we operate. Through this program, young people and adults have the opportunity to create audiovisual materials featuring themes and characters from their own localities, with a social focus that fosters identity between mining and the community.

S&P Global

Each year, we participate in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA), which assesses 3,500 public companies worldwide and is considered by many stakeholders to be the most complete and reliable ESG assessment in the market, making it a priority for us. CSA scores determine whether a company is included in the DJSI (Dow Jones Sustainability Index).

Sustainalytics

Grupo México and Southern Copper Corporation actively participate in the assessment and engagement processes of the rating agency Morningstar Sustainalytics, being evaluated within the Diversified Metals Mining sector.

CDP

Grupo México has been submitting the CDP questionnaire on climate change each year since 2016, covering all three Grupo México divisions, including our subsidiaries Grupo México Transportes and Southern Copper Corporation.

Corporate human rights benchmark

Grupo México has been participating in the Corporate Human Rights Benchmark annual assessment since 2019 in the category extractive companies.

World Benchmarking Alliance

In 2023, Grupo México responded for the first time to the Gender Benchmark questionnaire, which evaluates and compares how companies promote and advance gender equality and women’s empowerment across their value chain.​

Grupo México and Southern Copper Corporation annually respond to the ESG Ratings assessment by the MSCI agency.

FTSE Russell

Grupo México actively participates in the annual evaluation by FTSE Russell. This process enables the company to be considered for inclusion in the FTSE4Good sustainability indices, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to best practices in sustainability and corporate responsibility.

Climate Action 100+

Grupo México also responds annually to the Climate Action 100+ questionnaire, a leading global initiative aimed at ensuring that greenhouse gas-emitting companies take effective action to address climate change.

AMAFORE

Annually, Grupo México responds to the standardized environmental, social, and governance (ESG) questionnaire for issuers developed by the Mexican Association of Retirement Fund Administrators (AMAFORE). This questionnaire is the result of a collaborative project among retirement fund administrators, aimed at aligning efforts in integrating ESG factors into the investment process of the Specialized Investment Companies of Retirement Funds (Siefores).

The Global Compact

Americas Mining Corporation (AMC), our main subsidiary, adheres to the United Nations Global Compact. As a result, we annually publish a detailed report to the Global Compact, including contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)​
